Swirled and Segmented Silicone Wristbands: How Its Done!

How are swirled and segmented wristbands produced? Well, here it is!

As you know we begin our entire silicone wristband bracelets with 100% latex free silicone material. To make the swirl effect, we begin with raw silicone material. Raw silicone for wristband manufacturing is pliable; it is similar to a taffy consistency. Color is added based on the order’s specifications. Once this is complete, then we roll out the colors in strands. We twist or intertwine the colors together like a candy cane. We twist and fold over the strand several times. Once we have achieved the swirl wristband effect, the silicone is rolled out into a sheet, heated to 200C degrees and pressed into the mold. Up to 4 colors may be swirled together. You may choose from our stock colors or contact us for a variation custom to you and your wristbands!

A mold is the steel die we have created for your custom message. The swirled silicone sheet is then placed onto it. Using 10,000psi, the message is stamped or imprinted into the wristband. Molds may be single units or made in larger trays to manufacture large quantities. Once you have purchased a mold from Wristbands.net with your custom logo or message in a debossed or embossed order, it is yours to keep. Molds may manufacture over 1,000,000 wristbands before they deteriorate and must be recast.

Segmented wristbands are manufactured with the same base process. Rather than twisting the colors together, the silicone colors are placed side by side. The silicone roll is then heated, rolled into a sheet and placed into the mold. You may select 2 segmented wristbands from our stock colors as well as segment up to 6 colors of your choice creating your own, unique look. For more colors, please contact us directly.

Choosing the Right Font for Wristbands

Your message and reason for the custom silicone wristband your wear is unique to you. It may serve as a reminder for thanks, a memory of a love lost or simply to raise awareness. The font chosen to write your message is almost as import as the color choice.


Fonts offered by wristbands.net are numerous. Some look better than others on certain wristband styles and choosing a font for your message can be overwhelming. You may select a bold font or something less traditional and fun. Either way, the selection is important as your cause, message and reason is significant.

Wristbands.net would like to take the time to help with font selection. Often we are asked “What looks best”? Here are some simple suggestions for some of our different styles.

For traditional, solid, debossed wristbands, any font on our selection page is appropriate. However, when swirled bands are ordered, font selection is more important. Swirled wristbands are 2 color of silicone mixed or swirled together. Segmented wristbands are two silicone colors, adjacent or side by side each other.

Because of the nature of the swirl wristbands, a bold font selection is necessary so the message is legible. Such fonts include but are not limited to, IMPACT, Arial Black, Andy Bold, or Verdana. The fonts are bold and appear well against the swirled wristbands.

By contrast, fonts such as Papyrus, beach type or Script are not good selections because they are very ornate and thin. Given the 2 color swirl, these fonts do not appear well on the wristbands in a debossed or laser made style. The solution to this is to color fill the message text on the wristbands.

We offer many fonts on our website for you to choose from however, if you do not see the “perfect” one, let us know and we will add it for you! In addition, if you have a custom logo or typescript, we are able to print that as well.

Screen Printed Silicone Wristbands

What is the difference between Screen Printed, Color Coated and Color Filled wristbands? We are often asked this and will clarify it for you today!
Screen printed wristbands or ink jet bracelets are silicone wristbands with the message printed on top of the bracelet. Similar to a screen printed t-shirt, the message is printed onto the wristband in a similar technique to a printer printing on a sheet of paper. The bracelets are loaded on to a form and printed on using a silicone based ink. Screen printing provides a greater thickness in ink.

Color coated wristbands are 2 layers of color one on top of the other. The top layer is silicone paint and the bottom is the silicone wristband. When the message is engraved or debossed using a laser, the top layer is removed where your text or images is, revealing the bottom layer or color.

Color coated bracelets allows you a cost effective option to the color filled style however it has its draw backs. While color coated wristbands are easy to read and make a big impression, this type band was created for promotional use and occasional wear. Over time, the outer layer will wear or fade; this process occurs quicker with daily wear.

Color filled wristbands however are very different. Debossed, color filled wristbands are manufactured with a molding technique. A steel mold is cast with your custom message or logo. Once this process is complete, silicone is simply pressed into the mold and using 10,000lbs of pressure the message is stamped or imprinted into the silicone. Color filling adds an alternate color to the message text. The wristbands are manufactured by either mold or laser, and then re-stretched. Each portion of text or logo is individually filled with an alternate color and baked. This is very tedious and a unique art form. The baking process sets the silicone ink used to fill the custom message bonding it to the silicone wristband. Color filling is a unique feature and will not fade or chip and will withstand the test of time.

Breast Cancer Silicone Awareness Rings

Silicone wristbands are a popular item and the chief silicone style offer by wristbands.net but did you know we stock breast cancer awareness rings?

A well know morning television hostess popularized this ring on her morning show 3 years ago after her diagnosis and survival. Since then, the request for these in single units boomed with calls inquiring where they could be purchased. As a result, wristbands.net decided to help meet the demand and offer them in single or bulk units. We are proud to say the sale of each ring benefits the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We use eBay's Giving Works program with MissionFish to make our donations.

These silicone rings are individually packaged for ease of distribution. They are pink with a simple, color filled pink ribbon in the center as you see in our blog’s image. Glow in the Dark Silicone Wristbands

Glow in the dark wristbands are HERE! It has taken us some time to bring these back out to you but here they are!

Wristbands.net has always carried these types of bracelets, but since they did not meet our standards, we removed them from our inventory until we were certain they would be good enough for our clients. Our chief issue was the glow factor. We seemed to have had a problem with the longevity and intensity of the wristband glow and were simply not happy with the product. As you know, we quality control all of our items to ensure you are nothing but happy with your product and provide only the best!

Our glow in the dark wristbands is offered in 3 colors. Glow blue, glow green and white. Glow blue is the image you see in this blog. Glow green glows a lime green color while white glow will the traditional glow in the dark color. If you are familiar with the pantone color chart, the color number associated with these is as follows:

We know you are wondering how we came across the resolution to our little problem. It was simple. We added more glow powder to our wristbands to intensify the glow and longevity. The wristbands begin with 100% latex free silicone. The glow powder used to achieve the glow in the dark effect is derived from a natural mineral called Sphalerite. This mineral is crushed into a powder form and mixed into the silicone prior to customizing. Wristbands.net uses only natural minerals in all of our products.

To get the “glow” effect, these bracelets must be “charged” with light. Similar to our ultraviolet sensitive wristbands, you must expose these wristbands to a light source. These can be any of the following:

Incandescent Light (your standard light bulb)
Black Light
Sunlight

UV Protection and UV Detection

As we close out April we want to remind our readers May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention month.


Since summertime is fast approaching, we at wristbands.net want to take the time to remind you to protect yourself from the sun with some helpful recommendations from the American Academy of Dermatology and a fun reminder of our ultraviolet sensitive wristbands!

Generously apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more to all exposed skin. “Broad-spectrum” provides protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply approximately every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.

Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses, where possible.

Seek shade when appropriate. Remember that the sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If your shadow appears to be shorter than you are, seek shade.

Protect children from sun exposure. Be sure to play in the shade, use protective clothing, and apply sunscreen.

Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand because they reflect and intensify the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chances of sunburn.

Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. If you want to look like you've been in the sun, consider using a sunless self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it.

Our ultraviolet sensitive wristbands are a helpful reminder when UV rays are at their peak. The color change from beige to deep purple is a clear indicator to seek shade or enjoy to indoor activity! Stack It Up: Custom Layered Silicone Wristbands

The layered look is back! Wristbands.net has brought the stacked, custom silicone wristbands back by popular demand! These custom silicone wristbands allow you to choose multiple colors and “stack” them one on top of another.

As you know we offer the color coated silicone wristbands. Color coated wristbands are 2 layers of color; one on top of the other, horizontally. The top layer is silicone paint while the bottom is the silicone wristband. When messages are engraved, the bottom layer of color appears as the message text. This is our cost effective alternative to our color filled wristbands.

Stacked wristbands are multiple colors of silicone stacked one on top of the other; vertically. You are able to select up to 6 colors of silicone to stack. When six layers are loaded and bonded, the result is a 1” wide wristband! Screen printing to further customize these bracelets are the most popular technique if messages are to be printed on these, but we have found our clients prefer to just leave them blank!

Embossed Wristbands Truly RAISE Awareness

There is often a lot of confusion between debossed wristbands and embossed wristbands at wristbands.net. To clarify, this blog will focus on the differences.


Debossed wristbands are the most recognized and ordered wristbands offered by wristbands.net. It is where the message is “sunken in” or imprinted in the wristbands. All of our wristband styles may be ordered as debossed wristbands including USB flash drives.

Embossed wristbands are where the text, logo and messages are raised above the surface of the wristbands. We use the same molding technique to create these as debossed wristbands. The difference is the mold is created with negative space. When the silicone is pressed into the mold, the impression is reversed and raised.

Like color filled debossed wristbands, embossed wristbands may have an alternate colored message. The message is cast in a mold in an alternate color. Once set, the message is transferred to the wristband and adhered to the wristband with silicone glue. The affect is a solid colored wristband with a separate, colored, raised message.

Embossed wristbands are unique indeed! These are often used for the visually impaired as the unique message can be raised in the braille alphabet. With this awareness, causes and any unique message can be spread to EVERYONE! There are truly no limits to your receiver!

All Shapes and Sizes

Did you know wristbands.net can custom create any size you wish? By any size, we also mean circumference, or size, and height!


Traditional silicone wristbands are generally seen in one height size which in our terms is 12mm or ½ inch. Wristbands.net can create height sizes from ½ inch to 1 inch or larger. The one inch wristbands are called custom wide wristbands. In addition, we can create thinner versions as well. Custom thin bracelets are ¼ inch in height.

Our standard wristbands are sized as small, 7 inches in circumference, medium, 7.5 inches in circumference and large, 8 inches in circumference. A large sized custom wristband is roughly the same circumference as a soda pop can. Since wristbands from wristbands.net are made to order, we have the ability to produce any size smaller or larger you wish! Toddler and youth sizes are smaller than 7 inches in circumference.

More and more of our recent customers are taking their customized silicone wristbands to another level! Custom wide wristbands are used as business cards, birth announcements and party invitations! Up to 4 lines of text may be clearly printed on these. They may be debossed, color filled and embossed as well.

Color Coated vs Color Filled Wristbands

What is the difference between Color Coated and Color Filled wristbands? We are often asked this and will clarify it for you today!


Color coated wristbands are 2 layers of color one on top of the other. The top layer is silicone paint and the bottom is the silicone wristband. When the message is engraved or debossed using a laser, the top layer is removed where your text or images is, revealing the bottom layer or color.

Color coated bracelets allows you a cost effective option to the color filled style however it has its draw backs. While color coated wristbands are easy to read and make a big impression, this type band was created for promotional use and occasional wear. Over time, the outer layer will wear or fade; this process occurs quicker with daily wear.

Color filled wristbands however are very different. Debossed, color filled wristbands are manufactured with a molding technique. A steel mold is cast with your custom message or logo. Once this process is complete, silicone is simply pressed into the mold and using 10,000lbs of pressure the message is stamped or imprinted into the silicone. Color filling adds an alternate color to the message text. The wristbands are manufactured by either mold or laser, and then re-stretched. Each portion of text or logo is individually filled with an alternate color and baked. This is very tedious and a unique art form.The baking process sets the silicone ink used to fill the custom message bonding it to the silicone wristband. Color filling is a unique feature and will not fade or chip and will withstand the test of time.

Latex vs Silicone Wristbands: What is the difference?

A very interesting inquiry came in recently. The client asked us what the difference between latex and silicone wristbands is. Very good question we had the answer to and here is where we can share it with the rest of you!


We always boast that our wristbands are 100% latex free. This is particularly important for those with latex allergies, but most people don't know the difference or why it even matters.

Latex is a natural rubber. It is the protective fluid in the tissue under the bark of the rubber tree; the sap so to speak. When latex is exposed to air, it coagulates and hardens. Chemical additives are introduced to the natural product to provide elasticity and pliability. It is the protein in latex that causes allergic reactions. When styrene and butadiene are mixed together, the resulting product is synthetic latex. It is these chemical that also increase allergic reactions. Latex reactions can range from a simple skin rash to perioperative anaphylactic reaction.

Silicone is commonly confused with the metallic alloy Silicon or Si as it is chemically referred to. Silicone is a polymer that includes silicon with carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Silicone is most commonly used to manufacture household products and wristbands as it is durable, rubber-like and heat resistant. Because silicone is a polymer, no chemical additives are required.

Contrary to popular belief, silicone wristbands cannot be recycled once manufactured into wristbands. Once silicone is cast into a mold or engraved, the product is so heat resistant, it cannot be reheated to be reshaped or recycled.
